The family of a British tourist found dead in a Bangkok hotel is urgently seeking answers as new developments raise questions about the circumstances surrounding his death.
Joshua Kershaw, 21, was discovered dead in his hotel room on January 13, just hours after arriving in Thailand. His family now says the case has been reopened and is being treated as a potential case of murder or manslaughter following concerning toxicology findings.
According to reports, Kershaw arrived in Bangkok and checked into a hotel on Sukhumvit 7/1 before heading out to nearby nightlife spots. During the evening, he was seen socializing and drinking with a woman identified as Ambali Mbali, along with other individuals.
In the early hours of the morning, Kershaw reportedly collapsed at a bar around 2:20 a.m. Witnesses said the woman remained nearby as he fell. He was taken to a hospital for treatment but is believed to have discharged himself roughly an hour later.
After leaving the hospital, Kershaw returned to the same area, had additional drinks, and eventually made his way back to his hotel at approximately 5:30 a.m.
He was found dead in his room later that day by hotel staff.
Kershaw’s mother, Jenny, said toxicology results revealed a combination of seven different substances in his system at extremely high levels—raising serious concerns about how he died.
“It has now come to light that his case is being treated as murder/manslaughter,” she said in a public statement, adding that authorities in Thailand have reopened the investigation. The family is also awaiting confirmation from UK coroners.
As part of their efforts to understand what happened, Kershaw’s family has publicly appealed for help identifying and speaking with Ambali Mbali, who they believe was with him during his final hours.
“We are urgently trying to identify and speak with a woman who was with Joshua Kershaw at the time he sadly passed away,” his mother said. “We believe she may have important information.”
The appeal has been widely shared online as the family hopes to locate her and gain clarity about the events leading up to Kershaw’s death.
Meanwhile, Creek Boi Studio, which had been mentioned in connection with the woman, stated that it has no information regarding her identity or whereabouts.
Kershaw, originally from Grimsby and later living in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, had traveled to Thailand for what was meant to be a week-long holiday. His family initially reported him missing after he failed to board scheduled return flights to the UK.
Authorities later classified him as a high-risk missing person before confirming his death.
Questions have also been raised about the initial handling of the case. According to sources, the responding officer reviewed CCTV footage but did not escalate the matter or notify the British Embassy at the time, reportedly believing there was nothing suspicious.
Kershaw’s body has since been returned to the United Kingdom, where a funeral was held following his repatriation.
The investigation into his death remains ongoing as his family continues to search for answers—and for the woman they believe may hold key information about his final hours.
