A 19-year-old nursing student, Kiriyanah Harris, was found dead inside a home in Huntsville, Alabama, on Tuesday evening, prompting an active investigation by authorities, police said.
Harris was a student at Drake State Community and Technical College. Loved ones described her as a caring and kind young woman whose life was tragically cut short.
According to Huntsville Police, Harris died in a shooting that occurred inside the residence. Officers responded to the scene and later confirmed her death as the investigation began.
Huntsville Police Chief Kirk Giles said investigators later located an armed person of interest connected to the case. When officers attempted to remove the individual from a vehicle, the situation escalated into a shooting involving law enforcement.
Authorities said the man was transported to the hospital in critical condition. No additional injuries were reported.
The home where Harris was found was being rented by her mother and shared with her siblings, according to the property owner.
Neighbors described a heavy police presence in the area as the situation unfolded.
Joanie Barrineau, who has lived in the neighborhood for nearly 50 years, said she witnessed emergency responders arrive at the scene.
“Police cars were lined up and down the street. I saw an ambulance and some unmarked cars with detectives and a hearse,” she said. “Everybody was wondering what was happening.”
Barrineau also said she heard a woman screaming earlier that night, describing it as a distressing moment.
“You could tell that something horrible had happened. She was screaming… crying,” she said. “I really wanted to go comfort her and pray for her because we knew that she was in great distress.”
Police said it is not yet confirmed who the screaming individual was, and investigators are continuing to piece together the timeline of events.
Harris’s family said they intend to continue sharing her story as they mourn her loss and await further answers from authorities.
