Paige Adams, Ex-Alabama High School Basketball Coach, Charged With ‘Deviant’ Sex With Student as Husband Drew Adams Files for Divorce After Indictment

A former Alabama high school girls basketball coach has been indicted on dozens of charges, including allegations of engaging in “deviant” sexual conduct with a student, in a case that has also led to the breakdown of her marriage.

Paige Adams, 35, a former coach at Cold Springs High School, was arrested Tuesday after a grand jury returned a 32-count indictment tied to alleged sex crimes involving a student.

The charges include one count of a school employee distributing obscene material to a student, one count of sexual contact with a student under the age of 19, and one count of engaging in a sex act or deviant sexual intercourse with a student, according to reports.

“This 32-count grand jury indictment speaks for itself,” Cullman County District Attorney Champ Crocker said.

Authorities have not publicly confirmed the age of the student involved at the time of the alleged incidents.

The indictment comes less than a month after Adams resigned from her coaching position at Cold Springs High School. School officials said her resignation followed a complaint that prompted an internal investigation.

Cullman County Schools Superintendent Shane Barnette previously described Adams as “a great role model for the young people of Cullman County” before the allegations surfaced.

“This is the first formal complaint I have received regarding this employee,” Barnette said in a statement. “As soon as the concern was brought forward, an investigation was immediately initiated. The employee chose to resign at that time.”

Adams had led the girls basketball program for one season, compiling a 23–11 record, winning an area championship, and advancing to the AHSAA Final Four.

The case has also had personal repercussions. Her husband, Drew Adams, who coaches the boys basketball team at the same school, filed for divorce shortly after her resignation. The couple had been married for approximately 15 years.

Prior to her time at Cold Springs, Adams briefly coached at Holly Pond High School in 2017, leaving after one season. At the time, she cited personal reasons for her departure.

“It was definitely hard,” Adams said at the time. “I prayed about it a lot, and I felt like I was being led in a different direction. You have to do what’s best for you and your family.”

The investigation into the allegations remains ongoing.
