A deadly shooting outside a Costco store in Strongsville, Ohio, has left a 61-year-old employee dead and a Texas man facing a murder charge, authorities said.
The victim, identified as Randy Corrigan of Cleveland, was shot Saturday evening in the parking lot of the Costco located at 16690 Royalton Road. Strongsville police said officers responded to reports of gunfire around 5:43 p.m. and found Corrigan suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Officers immediately began life-saving efforts before Corrigan was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Police said Corrigan was an employee at the store.
Suspect Charged, $5 Million Bond Set
Christian M. Bryant, 22, of Fort Worth, Texas, has been charged with an unclassified felony count of murder in connection with the shooting.
Bryant appeared via video for arraignment Monday morning in Berea Municipal Court, where Judge Sean Kilbane set his bond at $5 million, following a recommendation from Strongsville police.
According to investigators, Bryant was taken into custody shortly after the shooting, which occurred during busy shopping hours and prompted a large police response and evacuation of the store.
What Investigators Say Happened
Court documents indicate that witnesses saw Bryant approaching the store entrance with what appeared to be a weapon concealed on him. An employee—believed to be Corrigan—reportedly confronted him and told him he could not enter the store with the weapon.
Authorities allege Bryant then pulled out a semi-automatic handgun and opened fire. Investigators say he initially fired one shot, paused briefly, and then fired multiple additional rounds in rapid succession.
Police reports state that Corrigan may have displayed a pocket knife during the confrontation.
Bryant told officers he acted in self-defense, claiming, “A man approached me with a knife for no reason.” He repeated that claim during his court appearance before being advised by the judge not to make further statements without legal counsel.
Victim Remembered, Community Reacts
Family members and friends have described Corrigan as a devoted family man who cared deeply for his loved ones. An online fundraiser has been launched to help cover funeral expenses and support his family.
Several bystanders attempted to assist Corrigan immediately after the shooting, with one person applying pressure to his wounds until emergency responders arrived.
Despite their efforts, the injuries—reportedly including gunshot wounds to the chest, abdomen, and arm—proved fatal.
Ongoing Investigation
Strongsville police said the investigation remains active and that additional charges could be filed after the case is presented to a Cuyahoga County grand jury.
Authorities are urging anyone who witnessed the shooting and has not yet spoken to detectives to come forward.
The store reopened the following day, but shoppers say the impact of the incident continues to be felt, with many describing heightened awareness and concern while returning to the location.
