Shamar Elkins Kills 8 Children on West 79th Street in Shreveport; Wife Shaneiqua Elkins Hospitalized as Suspect Dies After Police Pursuit

Shreveport, Louisiana — A devastating and complex investigation is underway after authorities say Shamar Elkins is responsible for the deaths of eight children inside a Shreveport home early Sunday morning. His wife, Shaneiqua Elkins, is currently hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

According to the Shreveport Police Department, officers responded to reports of a shooting around 5:55 a.m. on April 19, 2026, at a residence on West 79th Street. Upon arrival, they discovered eight children, ranging in age from 1 to 14, deceased inside the home.

Authorities say a total of 10 people were shot across multiple locations connected to the incident. Two adult women survived, including one believed to be in a relationship with Elkins. One of the women, identified as Shaneiqua Elkins, remains hospitalized in critical condition after reportedly being shot in the head.

Investigators believe Shamar Elkins is the father of some of the children, though officials have not yet confirmed full details regarding family relationships.

The crime scene spans four locations, including two residences where victims were found, the site of a reported carjacking, and the location in Bossier City where Elkins was ultimately killed.

Police say after the initial shootings, Elkins allegedly carjacked a vehicle and fled the area. Officers later located the vehicle and initiated a pursuit that continued into Bossier Parish.

The chase ended in the 400 block of Brampton Lane in Bossier City, where gunfire was exchanged between Elkins and responding officers. Elkins was fatally shot during the encounter. Authorities say it remains under investigation whether he died from police gunfire or a self-inflicted wound.

The Louisiana State Police will lead the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.

While details are still emerging, unconfirmed reports from neighbors suggest there may have been prior domestic issues, though authorities have not verified these claims and have not released a motive at this time.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation, and officials say more information will be released as it becomes available.

The community is mourning the loss of eight young lives, and authorities are urging the public to respect the privacy of the families affected during this time.
