Two teenagers were killed early Sunday morning in a single-vehicle rollover crash in Vidalia, leading to the arrest of the 18-year-old driver on multiple felony charges. Louisiana State Police Troop E identified the victims as 17-year-old Michelle Baity of Natchez, Mississippi, and 19-year-old Jacob Bonnette of Vidalia.
The incident occurred at approximately 12:37 a.m. in the 518 block of Minorca Road. According to the investigation, Gregory Steele of Vidalia was driving a 2001 Infiniti QX4 northbound when he lost control of the vehicle. The automobile veered off the roadway and overturned, resulting in the fatal injuries of Baity and Bonnette. Both victims were unrestrained and were pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities confirmed that none of the vehicle’s occupants were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. Steele sustained only minor injuries, while an additional passenger was transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries. Louisiana State Police suspect that impairment played a role in the tragedy, and toxicology samples have been submitted for formal analysis.
Following the preliminary investigation, Steele was arrested and processed at the Concordia Parish Detention Center. He faces two counts of vehicular homicide, as well as charges for underage driving while intoxicated, vehicular negligent injuring, and careless operation. Louisiana State Police continue to investigate the crash and remind the public that impairment and a lack of seatbelt use often lead to deadly consequences on the road.
