LUELLA, TX — A tight-knit North Texas community is in mourning after an 18-year-old recent Tom Bean High School graduate was killed in a tragic two-vehicle collision on State Highway 11 on Wednesday afternoon.

The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed that the fatal accident occurred at approximately 3:44 p.m. on June 3, in the northbound lanes of SH-11 near McGraw Lane, just north of Luella. According to state troopers, Makynna Eden Tumlinson of Sherman was driving a Chevrolet Cruze northbound when her vehicle rear-ended a 2007 International truck.

First responders rushed to the scene, but Tumlinson had sustained fatal injuries and was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck, identified by officials as 37-year-old Hector Ivan Mejia Garcia, was transported to a local hospital with suspected minor injuries.

Texas DPS officials confirmed to KXII 12 that Tumlinson was a beloved student at Tom Bean High School, having just completed her high school career. Following the devastating news, school administration immediately canceled all campus and school activities scheduled for Thursday to allow students, staff, and community members time to grieve.

In response to the tragedy, Tom Bean High School opened its doors early Thursday morning, June 4, hosting a community remembrance gathering in the high school gymnasium. The district mobilized widespread resources to help classmates navigate the sudden loss, bringing in local pastors, grief counselors, and administrators to offer emotional support to any students in need.

Texas Department of Public Safety state troopers note that the crash remains under active investigation, and no further information regarding contributing factors has been made available at this time.
