31-Year-Old Cleveland Woman Christina M. Rivera Killed After SUV Collides With Construction Truck on I-71 Southbound Near Bagley Road

A tragic late-night highway accident has claimed the life of a Cleveland woman after her luxury SUV struck a stationary construction vehicle on Interstate 71 Thursday night.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol identified the victim as 31-year-old Christina M. Rivera of Cleveland.

According to state troopers, the fatal collision occurred at approximately 11:30 p.m. on June 4 in the southbound lanes of I-71, just north of the Bagley Road exit. Investigators stated that Rivera was driving a black 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class south when her vehicle veered into the far-right lane and collided with the rear of a 2017 International work truck stopped inside an active construction zone.

Highway Patrol officials confirmed that the construction truck was intentionally positioned in the right lane to protect a highway maintenance crew that was painting pavement markings at the time. The work vehicle had its high-visibility, flashing yellow warning lights fully activated when Rivera's SUV struck it.

Emergency medical personnel rushed Rivera, who was wearing her seat belt at the time of the impact, to nearby Southwest General Hospital. Tragically, she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival due to the severity of her injuries. The male driver of the construction truck was also transported to Southwest General Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries. Fortunately, none of the ground workers in the immediate construction zone were injured.

The crash caused major traffic delays overnight, as authorities completely shut down the southbound lanes of I-71 for approximately two hours to allow crash reconstruction teams to document the scene and crews to clear the heavy wreckage.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol notes that the investigation remains active and ongoing. State troopers have not yet released definitive details regarding whether speed, distraction, or other environmental factors contributed to the fatal collision.
