An 18-year-old senior at Forest High School has tragically died after being struck by a vehicle while walking to her school bus stop in Ocala, Florida.

Shannon Rushing was fatally injured on Monday, October 27, near the 1900 block of NW Old Blitchton Road, just moments after leaving her family home around 6:21 a.m. The Ocala Police Department confirmed the incident occurred during the early morning hours, shortly before sunrise.

Ongoing Investigation and Circumstances

According to authorities, the female driver of a Nissan SUV stopped and called 911 immediately after the collision. She has been cooperating with police as the investigation continues, though investigators have not yet determined whether Rushing was walking along the grassy roadside or in the road itself. The absence of sidewalks in the area and low visibility before sunrise are being considered as contributing factors.

Remembering Shannon Rushing

Shannon, who had previously attended Wards-Highlands Elementary School and Howard Middle School, is remembered by her family and community as a vibrant, outgoing young woman. Her older sister, Shanta Norton, who helped raise Shannon after their mother passed away over a decade ago, described her as funny, friendly, and full of life.

“Shannon was a very friendly, outgoing person,” Norton said. “She had disabilities, but it didn’t stop her. She was in the Christian Club at school and always encouraged others with her positive outlook.”

Kevin Christian, director of public relations for Marion County Public Schools, echoed these sentiments, noting that Shannon was “well-liked” and “always encouraging others.” School counselors are on campus to support students and staff as they process this tragic loss.

Safety Concerns in Marion County

As of October 18, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles reports that 62 people have died in accidents on Marion County roads this year, including at least 14 pedestrians. Investigators are continuing to review the incident and have not yet disclosed whether the Ocala driver will face any charges.

This heartbreaking event underscores the importance of road safety for pedestrians, especially students walking to school.
