Outrage has erupted across South Africa after a video surfaced showing Milnerton High School student Katlego Ncapai, a Grade 9 learner and lymphoma survivor, being beaten by fellow students identified as Leo Weber and Briint Davids.
The disturbing footage, reportedly filmed on school grounds, shows a group of boys laughing and cheering as they strike Katlego with a belt and what appears to be a pipe. The visibly distressed teenager tries to protect himself as the assault continues, leaving viewers horrified.
In 2024, Milnerton High School publicly celebrated Katlego’s recovery from lymphoma, sharing a post that read:
“I AM A SURVIVOR, I AM A WARRIOR, I AM A FIGHTER ❤️
Katlego Ncapai, our ball boy and Grade 9 learner, gives us all reason to smile today.
He had lymphoma and has been discharged from hospital after completing chemotherapy. It’s now in remission. We are super proud of this young man!”
The video of the assault quickly spread online, drawing condemnation from public figures and citizens alike. Cape Town socialite Siv Ngesi was among the first to share the footage, writing:
“Name and shame all these little bullies! I hate bullies! But I do love bullying bullies!”
Ngesi also announced that he and others were searching for Katlego to offer support following the traumatic incident.
Social media platforms have since been flooded with outrage and empathy for the young survivor. One user wrote:
“The ripple effects: When the bruises fade, but the damage doesn’t.”
Another commented:
“We keep saying ‘not again,’ but it keeps happening. Our schools are becoming trauma zones.”
As investigations continue, many are calling for swift disciplinary action and greater accountability from both the school administration and parents of the perpetrators.
“It’s not just about discipline,” one parent said. “Where’s the empathy being taught at home?”
