Milwaukee, WI — Authorities have released the identity and photo of the police officer involved in the fatal shooting of 26-year-old Elijah Wilks near 49th and Mill Road, following an altercation on Thursday, October 9.

According to Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman, the incident occurred when an off-duty officer on his way to work was involved in a minor traffic accident with another individual. Police say a confrontation followed, during which the other driver allegedly struck the officer in the face with a firearm, leading to an exchange of gunfire.

The officer, a 40-year-old man with over 21 years of service, fatally shot Wilks during the encounter. He sustained facial injuries but was not hit by gunfire.

Family members have identified the deceased as Elijah Wilks, describing him as a “kind-hearted young man” who leaves behind loved ones mourning his loss.

As per standard protocol, the officer has been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation. The Milwaukee Area Investigative Team (MAIT) has taken over the case, with the West Allis Police Department leading the inquiry.
