Rockland, Maine Student Brayden Callahan, 12, Killed After Being Struck by School Bus

Brayden Callahan, a 12-year-old student from Rockland, Maine, tragically died on Friday after being struck by a Regional School Unit 13 (RSU 13) school bus. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Eliza Steele Drive and Broadway, in front of the Eliza Steele Apartments, around 2:20 p.m., according to Rockland Police and Fire & EMS officials. Brayden, a student of Oceanside Middle School in Thomaston, was immediately given medical attention and flown to Maine Medical Center with life-threatening injuries but later succumbed to them.

Brayden’s grandmother, Peggy DeVarney, confirmed his death and expressed grief while seeking answers about how the tragedy occurred. “How could this happen with all the safety features these buses have?” she asked.

RSU 13 released a statement saying, “The safety and well-being of our students is our highest priority. We are working closely with local law enforcement and emergency responders as they investigate the incident.” The school district also noted that counseling services have been made available for students and staff affected by the tragedy.

Rockland police, the Knox County District Attorney's Office, and Maine State Police are conducting a joint investigation. At this time, it has not been determined whether the school bus driver will face any charges.

The community has responded with an outpouring of support for Brayden’s family, including organizing a memorial service in his honor. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to help cover funeral costs and has already raised over half of its $45,000 goal.

School officials are directing parents and guardians with questions to contact RSU 13 Superintendent John McDonald at 207-596-6620 or via email at [email protected].
