Pregnant Georgia Teen Jaylah Donald and Unborn Son Killed in Newton County Crash Involving Suspected DUI Driver

19-year-old Jaylah Donald, who was seven months pregnant, was killed along with her unborn son in a devastating crash early Friday morning in Newton County, Georgia. The tragedy occurred just hours after the family had gathered to celebrate Thanksgiving.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, the crash happened around 12:34 a.m. on Fairview Road near Crestfield Circle in Covington. Jaylah was riding in a Hyundai Sonata driven by her mother, Takila Donald, when the vehicle was struck on the passenger side by a BMW traveling westbound.

Authorities say the Hyundai was improperly backing out of a private driveway and failed to yield, placing it in the path of the oncoming BMW driven by Brandon Robinson, who investigators determined was under the influence at the time of the collision.

Jaylah and Her Unborn Baby Pronounced Dead at the Scene

Jaylah, who was expecting a baby boy, died instantly from the impact. Her unborn child did not survive. Family members say she was about seven months along.

Takila Donald suffered severe injuries and was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, where she remains in critical condition. Robinson was transported to a local hospital after complaining of injuries and was subsequently found to be driving under the influence.

Charges Expected Against Both Drivers

Georgia State Patrol reports that charges are pending for both drivers. The crash contributed to a deadly Thanksgiving holiday weekend across Georgia, which saw three fatalities and more than 115 injuries statewide due to dangerous driving.

Family Devastated: “So Much Life Ahead of Her”

Jaylah’s family described her as joyful, motivated, and deeply excited to become a mother.

She had so much life ahead of her and so much love to give,” her loved ones wrote on a GoFundMe campaign created for funeral expenses. “Our hearts will forever ache for the future that was stolen from them.”

Jaylah was a recent graduate of Maynard Jackson High School and had plans to attend college after giving birth. Her father, Jonathan Ponds, said she had told him about the pregnancy only hours before the crash.

I found out I was going to be a grandfather, and then a couple hours later, I lose my daughter and my grandson,” he said. “I was ready to embrace the role.”

Community Honors Jaylah and Her Unborn Son

On Sunday night, more than 50 relatives, friends, and neighbors gathered to release dozens of purple balloons in Jaylah’s memory.

Love your family, that’s all I can say,” said her grandmother, Genette Anderson, fighting through grief. She recalled rushing to the scene after a neighbor called to alert her to the unfolding emergency.

GoFundMe and Ongoing Investigation

A GoFundMe is helping the family with funeral and memorial expenses. Meanwhile, GSP’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team continues to investigate the deadly crash.

Authorities emphasize the ongoing danger of impaired driving during holiday periods. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, drunk driving accounted for more than one-third of all traffic deaths during recent Thanksgiving weekends.
