A violent domestic dispute in Farmingville, Long Island, ended tragically last week when Marcos Marques-Leal, 57, fatally stabbed his estranged wife, Adriana Barbosa, 46, and wounded a teenager relative before attempting to take his own life, police reported. Leal survived and is now facing multiple charges.
The incident occurred just after 8:15 p.m. on Thursday at the couple’s home on Granny Road, when a 911 caller reported a domestic situation rapidly escalating out of control. Suffolk County police officers arrived to find Barbosa and Leal both suffering stab wounds, along with a teenager who had also been injured during the attack.
Barbosa was rushed to Stony Brook University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The teenager was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said. Leal, who attempted suicide following the attack, was also hospitalized with serious injuries but survived.
Leal is charged with murder, criminal contempt, and endangering the welfare of a child. Authorities have not yet disclosed what triggered the deadly confrontation or the details surrounding the contempt charge. The investigation remains ongoing, and Leal is expected to be arraigned once he recovers.Neighbors expressed shock at the incident. “Very, very, very shocked. I never have problems with him, very nice people,” said Benvinda Viera, who lives nearby. Another neighbor, Dr. Richard Dark, described the chaotic law enforcement response, noting multiple police vehicles and ambulances arriving at the scene.
Friends of Barbosa mourned her loss on social media, praising her qualities and expressing outrage at the brutal attack. “Those who met you know that your qualities were countless, and that you deserved the best this world had to offer,” one wrote.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the botched murder-suicide.
