Veteran truck driver Ronnie Andrews, 61, of Robersonville, North Carolina, died around 6:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, after his tractor-trailer crashed through guardrails on the southbound span near the North Channel Bridge and plunged into the water below, authorities said. His body, along with the truck and trailer, was recovered later that evening.
Andrews had worked in trucking for roughly 35 years, including five years with Perdue Farms, which described him as a valued team member and extended condolences to his family. His wife said she spoke with him the night before the crash and that he did not mention fatigue or any problems.
The fatal incident came seven years after Andrews survived a serious wreck in 2018. In a social media post at the time, he shared a photo of his damaged truck and wrote that he felt blessed to be alive, saying he had only minor injuries.
Authorities reported no other vehicles were involved in Sunday’s crash, and the cause remains under investigation.
