A 28-year-old delivery driver who was working two jobs to support his family was found dead early Monday morning after completing what was supposed to be his last delivery of the night.
Authorities say Daniel Figueroa, who lived in Downers Grove, Illinois, had just finished a shift at Amazon before starting a late-night delivery shift for Uber Eats. Around 2 a.m., he dropped off an order at Loretto Hospital in Chicago. When the customer went outside to retrieve the food, he discovered Figueroa lying unresponsive, and his van was gone.
Police said surveillance video showed Figueroa trying to stop three individuals — reportedly two men and a woman — from stealing his vehicle. Investigators believe he was dragged for about half a block before the van sped away. He was transported to another hospital, where he later died. His death is being investigated as a homicide.
Authorities confirmed that a person of interest is in custody, but no suspects have been formally charged, and an official cause of death has not yet been released.Family members said Figueroa had taken on extra shifts to provide for his girlfriend, Sandra Guerrero, and her young son, whom he treated as his own. The couple had been planning a birthday celebration for the child the same day he died. His father told reporters that the hospital delivery was supposed to be his final stop before heading home for the night.
Both Loretto Hospital and Uber said they are cooperating with law enforcement as the investigation continues.
