Wes Rucker, Prominent Tennessee Sports Journalist, Confirmed by Family as Victim in Fatal Five-Vehicle Crash on Interstate 40 Near Cedar Bluff Road as Investigation Continues, Leaving Pregnant Wife and Family Mourning

A respected Tennessee sports journalist has been identified by family members as the victim of a deadly multi-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon in Knoxville, though authorities say their investigation is still ongoing.

According to the Knoxville Police Department, officers responded around 4:50 p.m. on Feb. 19, 2026, to a five-vehicle collision on I-40 West near Cedar Bluff Road. Investigators determined traffic had slowed or stopped when one vehicle was rear-ended, triggering a chain reaction involving several cars.

Police said a large pickup truck then struck the crash scene seconds later and drove onto one of the vehicles, fatally injuring the adult male driver inside. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials noted the crash remains under investigation by reconstruction personnel and that formal identification is typically withheld until official procedures are completed.

In the hours after the collision, widespread social media posts claimed the victim was Wes Rucker, a well-known media figure recognized for covering the Tennessee Volunteers and for his work with 247Sports and its Tennessee affiliate GoVols247.

Those claims were later publicly confirmed by a family member. In a Facebook statement, Rucker’s father-in-law said the journalist—married to his daughter Lauren—had been killed in the crash and that the family was devastated. He added that Lauren is pregnant with their second child.

Rucker was widely known in regional sports media for his reporting, on-air appearances, and podcast work covering University of Tennessee athletics. Colleagues and fans described him as a dedicated professional and a devoted husband and father to his son, Hank.

Authorities say the circumstances of the crash are still being examined. The family has asked for privacy as they grieve their loss.
