A tragic incident at a Newport park has left one man dead after he fell into a lake and failed to resurface.

Dwayne Dates, 52, of Beebe, Arkansas, died Friday evening following a fall into the lake at Lockwood Park in Newport, according to authorities.

Officers with the Newport Police Department were dispatched to Lockwood Park at approximately 7:41 p.m. on April 4 after receiving reports of a man in the water.

When officers arrived, witnesses told them that the man had fallen into the lake and did not come back up.

Emergency responders immediately began search efforts, but were initially unable to locate the victim.

Dive Team Recovers Victim

The Independence County Sheriff's Office Dive Team was called in to assist with the recovery operation.

Divers later located and recovered Dates from the water. Despite rescue efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities confirmed that no other injuries were reported.

Officials say there is no suspected foul play, and the case is currently being investigated as an accidental drowning.
