Former Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax Kills Wife, Cerina Fairfax, Before Taking His Own Life Amid Bitter Divorce Proceedings

Justin Fairfax, former Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, has been identified as the man who shot and killed his wife, Cerina Fairfax, before turning the gun on himself in a tragic domestic incident at their Annandale, Virginia home early Thursday morning.

Fairfax, 47, and Cerina, 49, were found dead inside their million-dollar residence shortly after midnight, following a distressing 911 call placed by their teenage son. The son reportedly discovered the aftermath of the violence and called authorities for help.

Details of the Incident:

The Fairfax County Police believe the incident stemmed from an escalating domestic dispute tied to a contentious divorce and custody battle. The couple had been living under strained conditions for months, with divorce filings revealing a history of dysfunction and personal struggles.

Cerina Fairfax had filed for divorce in July 2025, citing her husband's financial irresponsibility and alcohol abuse. According to court records, a judge had recently granted Cerina primary custody of their two teenage children, ages 16 and 14. The family was due back in court for a hearing on April 21, just days before the tragedy unfolded.

Police believe the fatal shooting occurred after an argument, during which Justin Fairfax shot his wife multiple times in the basement of their home. He then proceeded upstairs to the primary bedroom, where he took his own life. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

A Family in Crisis:

The Fairfax family's case had been heavily publicized, particularly following Justin Fairfax's prior political scandals, including allegations of sexual assault by two women in 2019. These events had severely impacted his career, with many speculating that his once-promising political future was permanently damaged.

Court documents from the divorce proceedings described Justin Fairfax as a "deadbeat" father and alcoholic. Cerina Fairfax alleged that he had failed to contribute financially to the family, even neglecting to pay household bills and defaulting on the mortgage. Additionally, she claimed that Fairfax had misused funds intended for their children’s activities on a handgun, which ultimately played a tragic role in the events.

The couple had been separated since June 2024, though they continued to live in the same house. They entered a post-nuptial agreement in December 2024, with no hopes for reconciliation, according to the divorce filings.
