Reko Escobar Gonzales Shot Dead Days After Birthday in Double Shooting on 79th Street and St. Lawrence in Chicago

A man identified as Reko Escobar Gonzales was shot and killed in a double shooting late Tuesday night in Chicago’s Chatham neighborhood, according to police.

The shooting occurred around 10:39 p.m. near 79th Street and St. Lawrence Avenue. Officers from the Chicago Police Department, along with Cook County Sheriff’s Police, responded to reports of two people shot.

When authorities arrived, they found Gonzales, 30, outside with multiple gunshot wounds to the leg. He was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

A second victim, a 31-year-old man, was discovered inside an apartment with a gunshot wound to the neck. He was taken to the hospital and is currently listed in good condition.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the victims were inside an apartment with several other individuals when a verbal altercation broke out. The situation escalated into a physical confrontation, during which someone produced a firearm and opened fire before fleeing the scene.

No suspects are currently in custody as Area Two detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The fatal incident comes just days after Gonzales celebrated his birthday, adding to the tragedy of the loss.
