Authorities are investigating a fatal shooting that claimed the life of 21-year-old Isiah Kaine Thurman Tuesday evening in Brighton, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
The victim, identified by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office as Thurman, was a resident of Brighton.
Deputies were dispatched at approximately 5:08 p.m. to the 4000 block of Bethany Avenue following reports of a person down.
Upon arrival, responding officers found Thurman suffering from gunshot wounds.
Emergency personnel with Brighton Fire and Rescue Service responded to the scene and attempted life-saving measures. Despite their efforts, Thurman was pronounced dead at approximately 5:57 p.m.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has classified the case as a homicide and confirmed that an active investigation is underway into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
At this time, authorities have not released information regarding a suspect, possible motive, or the events leading up to the incident. No arrests have been made.
The Brighton shooting was one of two deadly incidents reported in Jefferson County within a short period Tuesday.
Less than 30 minutes earlier, another fatal shooting occurred on the front porch of a residence in south Birmingham. Authorities have not indicated whether the two incidents are connected.
The case marks the first reported homicide in Brighton in 2026.
