A 16-year-old high school senior has been identified as the victim killed in a shooting at a Louisiana shopping mall, where gunfire erupted and left several others injured.
Martha Odom died from a gunshot wound to the chest, according to a statement released by the local coroner’s office following the incident at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge.
Authorities said the shooting occurred Thursday afternoon when two groups exchanged gunfire inside the mall’s food court, sending shoppers scrambling for safety. In addition to Odom’s death, five other individuals were injured.
Martha was one of several students from Ascension Episcopal School who were present during the incident. Reports indicate that at least five students from the school were at the mall and were caught in the crossfire.
In a statement, the school described Odom as “a joyful presence whose kindness and infectious enthusiasm brought light to all who knew her.”
“Ascension Episcopal School carries this cross together,” the statement said. “We are holding one another close with an immense amount of faith and love.”Local reports indicate the students had gathered for an unofficial senior “skip day” as graduation approached.
Police said five individuals have been arrested in connection with the shooting, though details about their involvement have not yet been fully released.
Liz Murrill called the teenager’s death a “devastating loss of innocent life,” noting her connection to the victim’s family.
“Martha had her whole life in front of her,” Murrill said. “Those responsible for this senseless violence must face the full force of the law.”
The shooting is one of more than 100 mass shooting incidents reported in the United States so far this year, highlighting ongoing concerns about gun violence and its impact on young people.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting as the Baton Rouge community mourns the loss of a young life.
